And we love knowing that our bread nourishes the nation, as it has since 1982.

Our Promise

Good bread nourishes and sustains you to your next meal. The art of making good bread takes patience and love for a traditional process that transforms flour, yeast, water, oil and seasoning into tastes and textures that nurture your soul.

 

Our founders, Dr Mere Tuisalalo Samisoni and her husband Dr Jimione Isimeli Samisoni, were medical professionals who believed in the importance of a healthy diet. That is why, to this day, we bake using natural ingredients and no preservatives. 

 

As a home-grown company, we are proud to work with local suppliers, selecting the best ingredients whether we are baking bread, buns, pies, pastries, cakes or making our famous fresh sandwiches, hot dogs, pizzas and roast chicken.

Our Story

When Dr Mere Tuisalalo Samisoni opened our first Hot Bread Kitchen bakery in 1982 in Harbour Point, Suva, it was the first time people in Fiji could buy freshly baked bread straight from the bakery. The queues stretched around the corner from morning until evening when the last loaf of the day was sold.

 

Mere, who was a qualified Nurse, was a gifted business administrator and quickly opened two more shops within months of each other in Raiwaqa and Samabula. With the support of her husband, Dr Jimione Samisoni(who became Dean of the Fiji School of Medicine*), Dr Mere's business expanded throughout Fiji and internationally to Samoa, Hawaii and the Solomon Islands.

 

Even though the business was growing quickly, Dr Mere's principles stayed the same: freshly baked, healthy bread, hand crafted with natural ingredients and no preservatives, in a hygienic environment with friendly customer service.

 

Today, our customers also enjoy our buns, rolls, delicious meat pies, sweet pastries and cakes, rotis, pizzas, roast chickens and fresh sandwiches from 27 shops.

Our HBK Family

Our team of over 650 loyal employees provide for our valued customers through 27 shops.

 

We are proud to retain so many long-serving members of staff, who have raised their families and been able to buy their own homes and raise their families while working with us, sharing their dedication and passion for good food.

 

Every day, our HBK family helps us in the pursuit of QSC: Quality, Service, Cleanliness. An equal opportunity employer, we have won Employer of Choice on multiple occasions and Dr Mere was awarded Fiji's Business Woman of the Year three times.

 

Dr Mere passed in 2023; her legacy lives proudly on.
